Over a decade, Thai food is a great alternative food in any country. From “Tom yam kung” and “Pad Thai” to other menus in Thai’s recipe. “Somtam” is the one which has been put in the top list of the menu in Thai restaurant that has been selected by a foreigner from Europe until Asia. “Somtam convent” which one of the oldest Somtam restaurants in Bangkok had planned to rebrand and locating their restaurant on the famous shopping mall but how to approach the famous menu in the different way form other ones.
The project was started with Santi Lawrachawee from Practical design studio who has created a framework and directed the positioning of branding. After the framework was set up, we had proposed our idea which aimed to designed “Somtam” restaurant without any Thai authentic ornament or denied the Thai vernacular ornaments as Thai restaurant has had. We intend to create an atmosphere to be unpredictable and lets the graphic from Practical design studio inform the story and content.
The main idea is how to provide space more flexible as much as It could be to adjust the tables when customers have come. We proposed “The pok pok bar” as the main counter in the middle, “Pok Pok is sound when chef made “Somtam”, In this case, the bar is served three stations where chefs cooked “Somtam” where the customers could receive sound and smell. The walls and floor were separated between two contrast materials and guide the client’s perception to the end of the area inside while the graphics are representing some message about Somtam or interact with the clients. However, the above plane was finished with white colour come with adjustable lighting which contains with track lights and adjustable downlight for flexibility in the future
Because the project is located in the famous shopping mall which gathers massive cuisine and design restaurants. This issue was solved that we avoid all styling design and placed the criteria in the middle between fashion design and the cooperation identity and collaborated with graphics as much. The result is adorable when all cartoons character and the stories on menu follow up the content which had planned from the beginning such as the images of the restaurant couldn’t define what kind of restaurant is it at the first time when they are walking on the corridor.
